Ariwara Narihira, a Heian Period poet, wrote a famous poem that begins with the line karagoromo / kitsutsu narenishi / tsuma shi areba, which means “I have a beloved wife / familiar as the skirt / of a well-worn robe. The Yatsubashi Historical Preservation Site on the grounds holds hundreds of cultural assets. The Kakitsubata Festival takes place in May and attracts about 250,000 visitors from all over Japan.
Festival of Kobo-daishi

Henjoin, the first temple of the pilgrimage of the three Kobo figures in Mikawa, is dedicated to one of three self-portrait statues of Kobo Daishi, the “Looking-back Kobo Daishi.” The grounds come alive on the 21st of every month by the lunar calendar as 300 booths pop up and are visited by many male and female worshippers.

Take National Highway 155 to Toyota-Minami IC on the Ise Wangan Route to Toyota Kanpachi IC on the Tokai-Kanjo Expressway, exit National Highway 153.
The leaves of about 4,000 maple trees turn red every year from mid- to late-November and are best viewed from Tomoegawa Bridge upstream one kilometer to the Korankei Gorge area. The landscape is very beautiful and the area is alive with many tourists. The area is illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere.

Atsuta Jinja is a great shrine with a long and distinguished history that has been revered by the imperial family since old times. The Kusanagi sacred sword, one of the three sacred treasures, is enshrined as the Shinto deity here. Many worshippers visit throughout the year for hatsumode and shichigosan. Atsuta Horaiken Hitsumabushi, charcoal-grilled eel fillets, are famous.
